The Scaling up Nutrition (SUN) movement has launched a new strategic plan to fight malnutrition among children in Kenema District. The document target the cause of malnutrition and focuses on coordination among stakeholders to help with the nutrition of the children.

The plan was launched at the Kenema District Council hall last week.

The communications officer of SUN, Emmanuel Aiah Senesie, said the essence of the launching of the document in the district was to popularize the plan at district level so that development partners and the local council would take ownership in implementing the thematic areas which are aimed at improving on nutritional rate in the country.

Senesie said: “This will empower the local people through the district nutritionists to train the people on some of the nutritional food available in their community and the benefits of given nutritious food to children.”

Barnedeth Mamie Allieu, another member of SUN movement, said: “The review of the old document allowed us to identify gaps and add new and innovative ideas that will add value on nutrition.”

The launch of the document attracted stakeholders from within the health sector, chiefdom and council authorities.

At the opening session of the program, chairman of the Kenema district council, Mohamed Sesay, described the event as a significant stride towards addressing malnutrition in children in the district.

He said: “malnutrition most time causes the death of children at early age. Reducing malnutrition needs collective effort from all sectors, both council and NGOs working on nutrition in the district.”

The strategy document includes vital information on care for young children and the food they need to be given from one stage to another.

The SUN project started in the district in 2012 when the movement established a working group to coordinate their work in Kenema.
