The National Social Security and Insurance Trust NASSIT has on Tuesday 8th June 2021 extended its nationwide personal details correction for teachers in Bo district southern Sierra Leone.
The nationwide engagement with teachers is to ensure that their personal details are cleaned up consistent with NASSIT requirements. The exercise was jointly launched on Thursday 20 May 2021 at the Hotel 5/10 in Freetown by NASSIT and the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU).
Addressing the teachers, NASSIT Director General, Fuad Dabor said there are enormous problems with teachers ranging from incorrect information, multiple dates of birth, and SSS numbers, among others.He disclosed that if such anomalies are not corrected it will be a whole problem for teachers especially with payment of benefits when they retire.
Dabor said that they need to pay the right person and at the right time and with correct details when it’s due.
Speaking at the event Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education Dr. Moinina David Sengeh said he was happy with the move taken by NASSIT, noting that if their welfare is not addressed teachers will not offer their services. He stated that 35,000 teachers are on the government payroll accounting for 40%.
He appealed to the teacher's to cooperate with NASSIT to ensure their personal information is correct.
Chairman Teaching Service Commission, Conrad Sackey said that some teachers do not have correct information with the Trust and that it is an opportunity for teachers to ensure they do the needful so it will not affect them in future.
He disclosed that to motivate teachers, they have started awarding them in the districts, with the national awards to be held on the 17th June 2021.
The President of Sierra Leone Teachers Union, Alhaji Bangura who chaired the ceremony said teachers have gone through difficulties with regards their personal details and that it was an opportunity that they should make good use of. Bangura observed that some teachers are even without the NASSIT identification card all of which, he said will be addressed.
Deputy Head Teacher SDA Primary school Phebian Kandeh said that NASSIT visiting them was at the right time as that will give them the opportunity to ask many questions. She said many of her colleague teachers are not having their correct information and that they have little knowledge on the NASSIT activities of late.
