MRU donates Shea Butter to NDMA for fire victims in Sierra Leone

On 11th November 2021, the Secretary General, Mrs Medina A. Wesseh and Team paid a visit to the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) at their Sir Samuel Lewis Road offices in Freetown Sierra Leone. The purpose of the visit was do a presentation of a consignments of 150 cups of Shea Butter to the NDMA as part of the MRU response to the tragic fire disaster of 5th November 2021 in Freetown, which resulted in many deaths.  There were also many who survived with fire burns of varied degrees, hence the presentation of shea butter.

Welcoming the MRU team, the Director of partnership at the NDMA, Mr Soko Kaisamba lauded the Secretary General (SG) for the timeliness of the donation and expressed thanks and appreciation to the Secretary General for such a kind and pragmatic gesture. Mr Mohamed Bah, Director of Communications, NDMA, also thanked the MRU team and reiterated the importance of the gift.

In her remarks, the Secretary General once again expressed deep condolences to the president and people of Sierra Leone. The MRU SG then thanked the NDMA for their warm welcome and gave a brief background on the Shea butter. She stated that, the medicinal value of Shea butter in the particular instance of fire burns, the scars will all disappear once the application begins right after infections to the wounds have been treated, hence the need for the donation. The SG said that MRU will present for a start, 150 cups of about 1kg each with the expectation that each patient would get a cup of Shea butter to aid the healing process.

Madam Wesseh also informed the NDMA that in the spirit of MRU fraternal solidarity, the MRU Secretariat is expecting a team of medical experts from Liberia to assist in the treatment of the survivors of the fire incidence. On behalf of the MRU Secretariat, the SG ended by extending her sincere condolences to the President, Government and people of Sierra Leone for such a tragic incident, and prayed for speedy healing for the survivors.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the Director General of NDMA, Mr Kai Banya, Chief of Corporate Services of the NDMA, expressed thanks and appreciation to the MRU for such a timely donation adding that the gift will go a long way in aiding the beneficiaries’ recovery. He also thanked the MRU in anticipation of the expected medical team which he said will surely add value to the disaster response.

The symbolic presentation of the Shea butter formed the high point of the visit.
