Mercury International has on Tuesday presented a Le20M cheque to the King George’s Home of the aged as a donation.
King George’s the Sixth Memorial Home was established in 1988 and was under the control of the government to provide care for the aged. But it was later handed over to the Sierra Leone Society for the Welfare of the Aged. It has both elderly men and women as residents.
Hannah Deen, treasurer at the home, told Politico that they mainly rely on donations from charity organizations like Mercury, individuals and churches for its survival.
“We run the home from donations that come in from individuals, churches and charity organizations like Mercury International,” she said.
Mrs. Deen added that Mercury International had always supported them for the past years with money that had gone a long way in solving the financial needs of the home.
“On behalf of the Sierra Leone Society for the Welfare of the aged, I thank Mercury for their tremendous support towards the home. God will remember them as they have always remembered the old people,” she said.
Daniel Edward Davis, one of the residents at King George’s Home, expressed gratitude to the sport betting company, noting that the home had for a long time had some financial constraints. “But I know that the Le20M will salvage some of the constraints,” he said.
Samir Hassanyeh, Chief Executive Officer of Mercury International, said that he was happy with the relationship between his organization and the home.
“As long as Mercury International does operate in Sierra Leone, we will continue to support this home. And I hope that as usual the money is going to be spent on the home judiciously as this is not the first time we are donating money to this home,” he said.
