The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education (MBSSE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education has ended a day’s Education Sector review at Peace Garden in Kenema.
In her statement, the Director of Planning and Policy in the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Adama Jean Momoh said the purpose of joint review of the education sector was to look at the sector plan from 2014 to 2018.
She stated that the joint education sector plan review is meant to develop a new plan since education is the government’s flagship program.
She said the three thematic areas agreed upon include increased access, equity and retention in schools, and ensure system strengthening towards education in the country.
She added that this will give an opportunity to the authorities to look at those indicators that were set, based on the data generated by the Ministry of Education from their annual school census and from the multiple cluster survey done by Statistics Sierra Leone. “This will help to ascertain the goals achieved on the three areas that were stated by the ministry,’’ she said.
The director of planning stated that the session will enable them to look at data collected over the years, examining the successes and challenges on NPSE, BECE and WASSECE per district, which will position the government on how to fight against examination malpractices.
She admonished the participants to give honest assessment of the education system which will inform them for the next sector plan as a ministry for the benefit of the country as a whole.
In his statement, the Dean of the faculty of education Eastern Polytechnic, Alhaji Sheku Kamara described the event as important and timely since the educational sector requires total review, starting with the Education Act of 2004 involving all stakeholders so they will do justice to the process.
The Chairman Head Teacher’s Council East, Franklin Momoh Saffa said the program will guide them to know their fault as head teachers, identify issues that cause the collapse of education, and the good things that were achieved. They would also be able to move forward and help improve the education system especially in public exams.
