Mass retirement in Sierra Leone Police

By Mustapha Kamara

Politico can authoritatively reveal that more than 100 including four Assistant Inspectors General will be sent on terminal leave between 1st January and 24th March 2015.

The four AIGs are Director of the Operational Support Division Thomas T. Kamara, Director of Traffic Management Vincent Nabieu, Regional Commander South David Sesay and Regional Commander Freetown West, Philip Wellington.

A senior police officer confirmed the move saying that all the affected police personnel had been informed about this which he referred to as "a routine procedure" by which officers who reach 60 years are made to proceed on terminal leave.

He said if they remained in post beyond the age of retirement "it will be at the discretion of the police council". He said it was the responsibility of the Police Director of Human Resource to inform the officer at least three months in advance of their retirement.

Meanwhile AIG for Director of Training, Aiah Komba has said that 80% of his officers "lack basic computer skills."

Speaking at an introductory IT training programme for police officers at Kingtom, Komba said that in the past the institution had lost "important confidential documents to experts in Information Technology whom we hired to repair our computers and clean up our data systems."

"Such situations will end only if the police force gets its own IT experts who will be charged with the responsibility to operate its computers,” said Komba.

The Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police, Francis Munu, thanked Institute of Business and Information Technology for providing the training. He said it was important for police officers to have some knowledge in IT because "a time will come when recruitment spaces will not be available for police personnel who are computer illiterate.”

The Director of Training at Institute of Business and Information Technology, Mohamed Sillah, said they decided to give such a training to help capacitate the Sierra Leone Police because of their needs.

243 officers are being supported by the Institute of Business and Information Technology for the training.
