School authorities at the Hope Primary School in the Kamanda Farm Community, at the back of Fourah Bay College, have on the 24th January 2022 pleaded for the construction of a new structure.
Speaking to Politico the Head Teacher for the school, John Shine Robert said the school has been in existence for over ten (10) years. He said a Christian mission had tried for the community to be given a new edifice as the present makeshift structure is not conducive for efficient and effective learning to take place.
Robert added that they are faced with huge challenges during the dry and rainy seasons as they have to contend with dust and rain, the latter season forcing some of the children to stay away from school to avoid catching a cold or other illnesses.
Robert pleaded to the Government of Sierra Leone, NGOs, and Philanthropists to kindly help their school with a new structure so that the environment will be decent and conducive for efficient and effective learning.
The Chief for the Kamanda Farm Community, Pa Abu Sesay told Politico that for them as community people, they had lobbied to key stakeholders within the education sector for their environment to be considered for a decent school, but had been futile.
Pa Sesay said they usually come together every month in order to ensure they give stipends to those teachers who are really doing their level best in imparting knowledge to their kids. He added that the school was having some teachers who were trained in different fields but not qualified to teach but that pupils were still passing the National Primary School Examination with flying colours.
Foday Kanneh, a teacher at the School expressed his dissatisfaction over what he said is the habit of some community people deliberately littering a part of the school vicinity that is gradually turning into a dumpsite. He said while they as teachers are doing their best to always keep the environment clean due to the current condition of the school, some people are always throwing rubbish at the back of the school premises.
Kanneh said their key concern now is the school structure.
