Lebanese Community in Washington supports Sierra Leone

By Politico Staff Writer

In a bid to support Sierra Leone in its fight against the Coronavirus pandemic, the Lebanese Community in Washington DC has shipped a 40ft container of medical consignment to the West African country.

The aid, according to officials, came after the Sierra Leone Ambassador in Washington, Sidique Abou-Bakar Wai, set up a taskforce headed by Dr. Michael Rogers to galvanize support for his home country, Sierra Leone.

The Sierra Leone Consul of Michigan, Aiman Kawas, utilized his Lebanese background to mobilize his friends and Lebanese relatives in and outside United States of America to show solidarity to the people of Sierra Leone, according to a statement from the media handlers of the group.

Consul Kawas is reported to have reached out to his people who responded positively through financial and material support, all of which was channeled through the Embassy of Washington.

Among the people and organizations who contributed to the gesture are community based organizations, NGOs, individual philanthropists as well as religious organizations.

Ambassador Sidique Abou-Bakar Wai expressed confidence in the readiness of the people of Washington, including the Lebanese community, to always support Sierra Leone as long as the leadership continues to be transparent and trust worthy.

“Let me be clear that the container was shipped directly to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation in Freetown. We needed support and help and these patriots responded generously. May God bless them for caring and sharing with our peoples and country. They are heroes,” he said.
