The Mayor of Kenema city, Thomas Baio has handed over the City Hall and Clock Tower projects to contractors.
Hema Trading and Construction Limited based in Freetown won the bid for the construction of the clock tower, whiles local construction company Demba Enterprises and General Construction won the bid for the completion of the unfinished city hall.
“The Kenema city hall that started thirty-five years ago but uncompleted was one priority area that was on my table. The commissioning of the project shows the development strides of the Council under my leadership in the municipality,” Mayor Baio said.
Baio said the project for the hall would last for five months.
“The New Direction government has approved the budget for the city project and the contractor has started the work,” he assured.
Baio added that these projects were part of a general commitment by stakeholders across the district to make sure the district was developed.
The District Council Chairman, Mohamed Sesay, warned contractors against doing substandard work. He also urged them to finish the project on time and to do quality work.
“Contractors should bear in mind that the people of Kenema want quality work to be done. There should be no attempt to sell the materials. We should serve as monitors so [that] the best work will be done,” he stressed.
Chairman of civil society in the Easter region, Augustine Allieu Sannoh, described the event as a big day for the people of Kenema city.
“CSO’s role is to continue to ask politicians about the promises made to the people whiles contesting for various positions,” he said.
