John Sisay denies Biriwa meeting

Chief Executive Officer of Sierra Rutile, John Sisay, has admitted to having a private meeting with family members during which he discussed “issues very close to my heart, aspirations and my future” an apparent reference to his presidential ambition. He however denied holding any such meeting in Biriwa in the northern Bombali District.

The businessman, who is also president of the Chamber of Mines in Sierra Leone, said he was “setting the records straight” after newspaper publications, quoting a press release claiming that he had declared to run for president at a large meeting in Biriwa alluding to a breach of emergency regulations against large gatherings.

“It is responsible of any citizen and any man to hold meetings with their families. It is my right. We discussed issues around the Ebola Virus Disease and Biriwa in my house here in Freetown,” he said, adding that he was very concerned with issues around the disease in Sierra Leone.

“Together with my company, I have mobilised support for the national Ebola fight in cash and in kind totalling over Le3 billion. It tells you how much concern my family and I have over issues happening in the country right now,” he said.

The national youth league of the governing All People’s Congress was quoted as raising concerns about Sisay’s alleged declaration of intent to run for the party’s leadership ahead of the 2017/18 presidential elections, saying it was “unfortunate” and untimely.
