Iranian Embassy opens Book of Condolence

By Hajaratu Kalokoh

The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Freetown has opened a book of condolence for victims of the United State of America (USA) airstrike on their citizens in Iraq.

The book was opened on Thursday in honor of their slain Major General, Qassim Soleimani and four others who were killed in the US strike early this week.

A statement from the embassy reads: “The Embassy of Republic of Iran in Freetown present its compliment  to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Sierra Leone, all diplomatic Missions, Consular Corps and International Organizations accredited to the Republic of Sierra Leone, and with reference to the above has the honor with deep sadness to inform them that Major General Qasem Soleimani, the Commander of Iran’s Quds Forces, along with his four  Iranian  companions were assassinated by USA airstrike in Iraq capital Bagdad.”

The Iranian embassy in Freetown is the solitary Iranian representation in Sierra Leone, which also maintains an embassy in Tehran. The Iranian Embassy is one of the 37 foreign representations in Sierra Leone and one of the 27 foreign representations in Freetown.

The strike has heightened tensions between the two countries. Sierra Leone has not responded officially to the situation.
