HR managers unite for decent work

By Aminata Phidelia Allie

Human Resource managers from over 50 financial and economic institutions across the country have, in a 2-day conference, hung heads together to advocate for a decent work environment for workers.

Supported by the Sierra Leone Employers’ Federation and the International Labour Organization, the managers’ conference was held last week at the British Council in Freetown.

Delivering a power-point presentation the director of human resource and corporate affairs at the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank, Aminata Kamara, said the social environment of employees should be conducive enough to motivate them to continue in their jobs.

She said they, as human resource managers, wanted their colleagues to have “zeal and passion to carry out tasks assigned to them”, adding that it was necessary for employers to treat their employees as individuals and not as a group.

She said the survival of every organization depended on their human resource “because human beings are the most important resource of an organization”.

Managing Director of Sierra Leone Brewery, Willy Ngana, observed that as the country was making a speedy growth than any other country in the sub region, it was worthy of note that human resource had played a vital role in the transformation of the country.

He said the country needed the “right equipment and innovation to deliver effectively, emphasizing the importance of HR in the transformation of any business or organization”.

He admonished HR managers to understand and carry themselves properly so as to be able to add value to their organizations as “you are key partners in any business performance”.

He said “one cannot establish an entity without having the right human resource to regulate the affairs of the cooperation”. An interim executive that would champion the establishment of a national institution of human resource managers was also formed.
