The chiefdom health supervisor assigned to Gorama Mende and Wandor chiefdoms Kenema district Sallieu Lansana has on the 5th February 2021 catalogued the major challenges Peripheral and Community Health facilities are faced with in those two areas.
Lansana who was giving an update at an award ceremony organised by the District Health Medical Team (DHMT) and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) said health personnel lack simple things like gloves in the face of increased cases of diarrhoea amongst patients. He attributed the disease outbreak to lack of latrines in the villages.
He therefore called the attention of the district health team in Kenema to seriously address the problem.
Thomas Yambasu another health worker appealed for the establishment of a tuberculosis laboratory in the face of what he said was the growing number of infected persons, many of whom cannot afford the cost of transportation to Kenema.
The district logistics officer Kenema Umaru Kabia promised that the concerns highlighted will be looked into and commended them for their frankness and team spirit.
The head of health sector in the district Dr. Donald Grant confirmed that the challenges were enormous and that as district health management team, they will communicate with partners to ensure some of those challenges were addressed. He said a team had been sent to the TB reported areas to assess the level of infection.
Later on in a bid to motivate health personnel and auxiliary staff, they were presented with awards for their untiring efforts in their various areas of operation. Thirty- seven nurses, support staff including drivers and cleaners were recognised for their exemplary work. The IRC’s Saving Life Project supported the awards.
The district program officer IRC Mohamed Koroma told the gathering that the Committee was pleased with the co-operation and commitment of the awardees during the implementation of the saving lives project at the health units.
Kenema councillor Fatimata Njeiga of ward 42 referred to the initiative by DHMT and IRC as very unique and praised the health workers for their great sacrifice.
Aminata Lolleh one of awardees said they will be driven for more success as a result.
