The Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby has called on all hospital personnel to ensure zero preventable deaths in hospitals.
Demby made this call at the commissioning of Ward 7, Connaught Hospital, on 5Th of April this year, following its renovation. He said the Government has been doing its best, and could do even more if other partners help.
“Even if the government provides all the doctors, all the nurses, all the medicines, if we don’t have proper government structure it’s going to be difficult,” the minister said, calling on the private sector to complement government’s efforts.
He said Connaught as the premier hospital has been providing medical services in the country for over two hundred years. “If we don’t it get right here at the Connaught hospital, we won’t have it right at other hospitals across the country”.
He called on the public to have faith in the hospital, saying it has the best specialists in the entire country.
Speaking about the renovation of the Ward 7, which has been adopted by the Catholic Charity- Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny, he said it is important that the hospital management ensures quality service.
In his remarks, Connaught Hospital Care Manager, Dr. Ibrahim M. Kapuwa said the renovation of Ward 7 is an indication of their commitment to provide better medical services for patients, adding that they have been collaborating with the Sisters of St Joseph of Cluny to bring about transformation of Ward 7.
As a means of improving health services, Dr. Kapuwa said they have procured inter-telecommunication for all wards that patients will use to communicate on a toll free line for the coordination and response to their needs. “Additionally, we are embracing the digital age with open arms. We have trained our staff to manage electronic medical records,” he added.
A member of the catholic charity, Sister Josephine registered their commitment to support the hospital with quality medical services, recalling how “two years back, we had our meeting and agreed that we adopt Ward 7 at the hospital.”
Sister Josephine said initially they had wanted to adopt the children’s ward at Connaught, but due to the different medical conditions at Ward 7, they decided to adopt it with a view of improving quality services to patients having critical health conditions. “We want this ward to be an example of the Connaught Hospital,” she said, re-echoing their partnership with the management of the hospital in providing quality service to patients.
