Girls top primary school-leaving exams in Sierra Leone

Girls have again emerged as the first three best candidates for the just-released results of the 2022 National Primary School Examination (NPSE) in Sierra Leone with one taking the first position and two others sharing the second position.

Similar progress in girls' education was recorded in 2020 with three girls leading the national primary school-leaving examination.

This year, Pabs-Garnon Lorraine from International School scored the highest grade of 337 whiles  Nesralla Tyra from Leone Preparatory Primary School and Angela Sesay also from International School Limited were second with a score of 334 each. The girls are from private schools that are located in Freetown.

Announcing the results of one hundred and sixty-one thousand five hundred and twenty-four (161,524) candidates with seventy-nine thousand six hundred and seventeen (79617) which is 49% boys and eighty-two thousand four hundred and fifty-one (82,451) which is 50.9% are girls  who took this year’s exam across Sierra Leone on Monday 11th  July 2022 the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh said a pass rate of 81 percent was recorded which he described as the highest in years.

At the district level, Falaba topped the exam with the highest overall pass rate of 92.7 percent.  Out of the one thousand three hundred and sixty-one (1,361) pupils in the district, that sat the exam, one thousand two hundred and sixty-two (1,262) passed. The second was Bonthe district which got a 91.8 percent pass rate accounting for three thousand two hundred and seventy-six (3,276) from a total of three thousand five hundred and sixty-seven (3,567) candidates that took the exams. Koinadugu came third with 87.60 percent accounting for three thousand two hundred and forty-seven (3,247), from a total of 3,821 candidates that went for the exams.

Minister Sengeh disclosed that about 200,000 candidates have successfully checked their results after release, using the free SMS Result Checker recently introduced by the ministry.

Karene got the lowest district pass rate of (74 percent) accounting for five thousand six hundred and ninety-five (5,695) out of seven thousand nine hundred and fifty-eight (7,958) candidates that took the exams.

Also in last year’s NPSE, Falaba district came first scoring 93.22 percent followed by Kenema with 88.46 percent pass rate, while Koinadugu came third with 86.66 percent. A male candidate from the Western Area topped the exam last year.

This year’s exam was held on the 7th of May 2022.
