Girl, 16, ‘kills’ boy friend

By Septimus Senessie in Kono

A 16-year old girl in police custody in Kono over the

killing of her boyfriend has admitted stabbing him to death.
But Mary, not her real name, talking to Politico in an exclusive interview in detention at the Motema Police Division last week, said she did so in self defense.

The alleged incident occurred on August 14 in Jaima Town, Nimikoro Chiefdom. The victim, Sahr Gborie, 26, died after been stabbed following an altercation.

“I stabbed him on his left chest but I never meant to kill him,” Mary said in the interview facilitated by the police and conducted in front of three police officers who are part of the team investigating the incident.

The alleged incident occurred at around 4am following a musical show in Jaima Town where the girl said she`d gone to sell food [Fried fish and bread]. She explained that while she was returning home in the company of her younger sister, Gborie, who she referred to as her boy friend, “jealously” held her by the throat, demanding to know about her whereabouts at some point of the show when her goods were left in the care of her younger sister.

The accused said he didn’t give her anytime to explain and started beating her up. She said Gborie overpowered her and that there was no one around apart from her ten year old younger sister to rescue her from the “desperate” lover she`d fell in love with barely two weeks earlier.

May said she had no option at that point but to use the bread knife on her to stab him.

“And after that I saw him dropped on the ground and I dropped the knife also and ran away home,” she explained, in a subdued tone suggesting remorse.

The young girl, a Junior Secondary School [JSS II] pupil of the Jaima Secondary School, was later arrested by police officers from the Jaima Police Post.

Although Mary is aware of the severity of her action, she
appealed for mercy. She told Politico that since that unfaithful day she had been having nightmare thinking about the incident.

“I didn’t mean to kill my two week`s old boy friend…,” she said, regretfully.

But local authorities and family members of the victims are determined to see justice prevail. Richard Fears, Senior Section Chief of Nimikoro Chiefdom, described the incident as “unfortunate” and attributed it to the “heartlessness of youth of these days.” He said he would support the police to carry out their investigations on the matter and saw that justice prevailed.

The Assistant Crime Officer at the Motema Police Division, Inspector
Augustine Bunduka, told Politico that the matter was due to be charged to the Sefadu Magistrate court last week. He said they had almost completed obtaining statements from witnesses.

Like in many of part of the country, domestic violence and reports of murder and other crimes are rife in Kono.

But despite her young age, Mary hasn’t been able to get everyone`s sympathy as some members of the public want to see justice takes its course on the matter.
