FCC unveils low cost housing for Allen Town

By Allieu Sahid Tunkara

Mayor of the Freetown municipality, Franklyn Bode Gibson, has unveiled a one-year low cost housing project for Allen Town community in the east end the capital.

Speaking at the project site in Madina Section, Allen Town, Mayor Gibson described the project as “a major development,” stating that twenty houses would be constructed, together with two boreholes to provide water for the community.

He said there would also be health and toilet facilities which, he added, would restore the respect and dignity of the people. He however warned the community members to refrain from violence and stay focused towards the success of the project.

He noted that the project would be a great advantage to the community since it was very close to the two mega watts hydro dam.

For over eight months, FCC’s developmental aspirations had been affected by the outbreak of Ebola in the country, he said, noting that government’s activities had also been stalled but stated that “this is a different year.”

The Mayor pleaded with the community residents to take ownership of the project and contribute towards its success.

In his contribution, the head of Bricks and Shelter Construction Company, contractors of the project, Abdul Rahman Conteh, assured residents that his company would quickly accomplish the project as even he had noticed the challenges they faced in terms of housing. Though he mentioned no specific date of commencement of the project, Conteh said: “this is a one-year project. We want to accomplish it quickly since we have other projects lined up for us.”

Member of Parliament for constituency 096 in the Allen Town community, Alhassan Kamara, said that the community residents had for a long time been crying for essential services. He encouraged them to embrace the housing project even though other essential services were yet to reach their community.

MP Kamara noted that the project was in line with and addresses low cost housing promises made in parliament by President Koroma in 2013.
