The Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone has postponed the Students Union election to the 2nd of June 2021.
This notice came in the wake of preparations and campaigns for the election that was scheduled for Friday 28th May 2021.
The notice which is an outcome of a meeting held between the administration and the Election Management Committee, noted that before the slated period for the election, the voters register which is still in its compilation stage at the finance office will be displayed and that the six candidates would have gone through the verification exercise and certified by the election Management Committee as qualified to contest for the presidency.
The statement added that the manifesto reading will be done on radio for all aspirants during the 1st week of next semester.
“There will be no open singing and dancing on campus by any student. Those who are caught campaigning on campus unscheduled will be held responsible for the consequences of their actions,” the notice reads in part.
Six presidential candidates have so far expressed interest in vying for the presidency with two female students Adama Silla and Fatmata Binta Jalloh who have been on the lips of many as clearly the two main front runners with a chance of winning the election. Both are students at the law department.
Politico could not get all the candidates to react to the postponement of the election.
However Fatmata has in a press release reacted to the deferring of the election. She said: “I wish to express, in unequivocal terms, my disappointment with this latest development. In particular, my team deplores the lack of consultation by the University with the aspirants and the wider student populace. We also express regrets that the said notice failed to provide any information on the reason for such a postponement,” he said.
She added “I, however, wish to urge my esteemed supporters to remain calm and exercise restraint as I take steps to constructively engage the relevant authorities further on reasons for the deferment. My team will take all steps necessary to initiate dialogue with the administration for a speedy and amicable outcome in the best interest of students.”
