Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone (USL) is this Friday and Saturday conducting interviews for Diploma and Certificate programme students who have applied for Extramural Mural Studies being introduced by the college for the first time outside of Freetown.

Provision has been made for applicants in the districts of Kenema, Bo, and Makeni to be interviewed in their respective areas instead of travelling to Freetown.

Speaking to Politico, the Director of Media and Alumni Relations at the USL, Dr.Tonya Musa said extramural studies are part of their reengineering initiative of taking education to the doorstep of the people. He said even though they applied to the university they decided to interview the applicants in their various locations to ease the process and free them from hassles.

He also said that they are trying to decongest the campuses, and hence will be offering programmes for students living in those parts of the country, and believe it’s all part of their development initiatives.

He further added that they don’t have specific number per region because the applicants did not apply indicating their region and that after interviewing them, the university will be able to know the breakdown per region. He said over one thousand people in the Western Area have already presented their application.

“We will have successful applicants and that will motivate others to apply next year," he said

He said that it's all about decentralizing education to ensure that people have access to university education. He pointed out that FBC is just beginning the expansion process this year, unlike the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) which can now boast of campuses for extramural studies in Pujehun, Kailahun, Lungi, Bo, Kenema and Makeni.

“In Bo, IPAM will commence degree programmes not only diploma” he also disclosed.
