The woman who embodied the United Kingdom for generations died yesterday - 9 September. Aged 96.
On the throne for seventy years, Queen Elizabeth II passed away exactly 17 months since her husband, Prince Philip, died on 9 April 2021. He was 99.
The longest-serving monarch in British history visited Sierra Leone just five years on the throne in 1957. She is to be succeeded by her son, who will be known as King Charles III. He described the passing of his mother as a “moment of great sadness [which will be] deeply felt” around the world.
"We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother.
"I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world."
As we went to press tributes were pouring in from world leaders and other people she impacted or met.
Concerns had grown about the queen’s health early on Thursday, and several senior members of the Royal family gathered in Scotland where she was hospitalized.
Charles will lead a country in deep mourning. A statement from Buckingham Palace said she “died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."
All the Queen's children travelled to Balmoral, near Aberdeen, after doctors had placed her under medical supervision.
Her grandson and now heir to the throne, Prince William, is also there, while his brother, Prince Harry, was on his way.
