Ebola: 4 dead and counting in Guinea

By Mohamed Jaward Nyallay

Officials in Guinea, West Africa, have confirmed that Ebola has killed a young girl at the Nzerekore hospital. She becomes the fourth victim to have been killed by Ebola since it resurfaced in the Mano River Union country in February, 2016. Others countries in the union are Sierra Leone, Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire.

The resurgence of the Ebola virus is the latest setback Guinea has had in the Ebola fight since they was declared free from the disease by the World Health Organization (WHO) last December. Health authorities have started contact tracing to prevent the active spread of the disease.

WHO had warned countries about complacency as the Ebola virus can still be active in the fluids of survivors.

Neighboring Sierra Leone was recently declared free from Ebola for the second time after a setback in December 2015. Already other neighboring countries are reacting to the resurgence of the disease in Guinea.

Guinea Bissau and Liberia have announced the closure of their borders. Sierra Leone has enacted strict military protocols in the border areas with Guinea and banned movement of sick people and corpses to and from Guinea.

The Ebola epidemic broke out in 2014 and since then more than 11, 000 people have died of the disease in West Africa.
