Bo police probe two for illegal cannabis

By Politico staff writer

Two people remained in the custody of the Sierra Leone Police as investigations continue into the seizure bales of Cannabis sativa or marijuana weighing 213 Kgs, the largest haul to be intercepted in 5 years. The consignment was discovered at Fallah checkpoint, in Bo on the 30th of July 2021.

Speaking to Politico, Inspector Bobson Sanu, Police Media and Public Relations Officer South said they discovered the huge pile inside a Toyota Land cruiser with registration plate ANI 533 driven by a man named Ibrahim Abubakarr Kargbo.

According to their investigations,  Abu Bakarr Kargbo was taking the narcotic to one Mohamed Sesay of 11 Sesay Street in Kenema.

“The two suspects, exhibits and vehicle were escorted to the Regional CID and handed over to the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) south for further investigation,” he said.

Inspector Sanu also stated that with new strategies employed to curb crime in the region through intensified patrol and security check points, they have succeeded in making five arrests related to trafficking of marijuana on separate instances by different people.

However, he said the Bo consignment was the largest seizure since 2016 and said they have called on forensic experts for further examination of the drug. Marijuana is a prohibited drug under the laws of Sierra Leone, although campaigners in recent years have controversially called for it to be legalized, and even suggested it be exported to countries where it has been approved for medicinal use.
