Blyden’s bail restored

By Francis H. Murray

Magistrate Hannah Bonnie has restored the bail conditions of former Social Welfare minister Dr. Sylvia Blyden. The bail was withdrawn after the accused was told she failed to adhere to the orders of the court.

In his plea for the restoration of the bail, lawyer Charles Francis Margai, now representing the first accused apologized on behalf of his client for any wrongs she may have done while she represented herself before the court and pleaded that the accused was also before the high court for contempt which according him meant ‘‘double jeopardy’’ and pleaded for the magistrate to reverse her decision in the interest of fairness.

Magistrate Bonnie had earlier warned that because the matter was still before her court, the accused must not publish anything relating to the matter either on social media or her newspaper.

Dr. Blyden is jointly charged with Hussain Muckson Sesay, a third year Engineering student of Fourah Bay College with ten counts ranging from seditious libel, false publication, defamatory libel, conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and other related offences.

The matter is adjourned to the 30th June.
