Another suicide at Jalloh Terrace

By Mabinty Kamara

The Jalloh Terrace community in the east end of Freetown was in shock on the morning of Wednesday 28th January when the body of Obai Sesay was found dangling from a rope in his room in Kuntoloh.

The crime officer at the Approved School Police Post, Inspector S.F Alieu, told Political at the scene that "the incident was reported to us this morning and we are here to inspect the crime scene...we have collected the late man's cell phone and we will take it to Kissy Mess Mess police station for further investigation and we have called the burial team and they will be here soon."

Fatmata Samura, landlady of the deceased, 40-year old father of four, said she last saw him in the evening of the previous day. "When we greeted each other, then early in the morning his friends came around knocking at his door so that they could go to work. But unfortunately, he couldn't respond. This went on for nearly an hour before I gave permission for them to force the window open. This was how they saw his body dangling on a rope from the roof," the woman narrated.

The late man's friend Muctar Kamara said Obai had been staying alone for six month since he had "a misunderstanding with his wife who is currently staying with her parents and he earns his living from [digging] water wells and toilets."

Kamara added: "We were together the previous night till 10pm. All he told me was that he had to go to police headquarters in the morning on matters pertaining to his work."

Eyewitness told Politico they were concerned about the spate of suicides in the area. In May last year, a 35 year old father of two Mohamed Sesay hanged himself in unexplained circumstances.
