The Minister of Technical and Higher Education Professor Alpha Wurie is now Sierra Leone’s Acting Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, following the trip to this year’s UN General Assembly in New York, USA by Professor David Francis the substantive holder of that office.
This is the first time Prof. Wurie will act in that capacity. He first served the entire 11 years (two-term) administration of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) from 1996-2007 as the country’s then sole Minister of Education. Following SLPP’s victory in the 2018 polls, Prof. Wurie was appointed by President Julius Maada Bio as Minister of Health and Sanitation until early this year when he was moved to serve as Higher and Technical Education Minister in a cabinet reshuffle.
An established Chemist, Prof. Wurie will oversee the Foreign Ministry until the return of Prof. Francis who is among the delegation accompanying President Bio to the UN Assembly. The Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Mamadie Gobeh Kamara is also set to join the delegation in New York at the United Nations General Assembly.
