Alleged fraud victim testifies in court

By Francis H. Murray

Abdulai Top Mansaray, a business man who alleges that he was defrauded of the sum of $10, 000 (ten thousand US dollars) by one Alhassan Bundu in a car deal, has testified before Magistrate Hannah Bonnie in Freetown in an ongoing preliminary investigation into a two count charge of conspiracy to defraud and fraudulent conversation.

Mansaray told the court that he could recall sometime in January 2020 when the accused and one Alpha told him that someone had opted to buy the vehicle he wanted to sell. He said the accused and Alpha came to his residence where he gave them the vehicle so they could take it to the proposed buyer.

The witness said: ‘‘They later asked me to bring the vehicle’s documents to the house of Alpha where the supposed buyers were to meet them. So I mistakenly took documents for a Mercedes Benz’s vehicle instead of that of the Range Rover which they wanted and they realized after inspection that I had brought the wrong document. So I sent for the Range Rover’s documents immediately. I waited for a while and asked whether the supposed buyers were coming, but Alpha was nowhere to be found.’’

He said at that point he realized that something was wrong and he reported the matter at the Ross Road Police Station, were statements were obtained from him.

The witness described his vehicle as a 2008 Range Rover Sports Jeep model, valued at $12, 500 or Le 125, 000, 000.

The Prosecution says that sometime in January 2020 at Muslim Association Compound, Wellington in Freetown, with intent to defraud, the accused conspired with others unknown to defraud Mansaray of the sum of $10, 000 and that he fraudulently converted the money from the sale of the jeep in question to his own use.

Inspector Isatu Gbassay Fofanah is prosecuting.
