Aki Sawyer reelected Freetown Mayor

Yvonne Aki Sawyer Mayoral Candidate of Sierra Leone’s Main Opposition party the All People’s Congress (APC) has been re-elected  for a second term, defeating her closest rival in the race Mohamed Gento Kamara of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).

The Chief Electoral Commissioner Mohamed Konneh made the announcement yesterday 1st July 2023, three days after the presidential results had been announced. Sawyer won with a total of two hundred and eight-eight thousand six hundred and eighty-three (288,683) of valid votes cast, according to the Commissioner which represents 51.3 % of the total valid votes cast.

Her closest challenger Kamara got two hundred and sixty- eight thousand two hundred and thirteen votes which represents (268,213) amounting to 47.72% of the total valid votes cast. Independent Mariam Seray Kabba who challenged Sawyer in the Mayoral debate got five hundred and fifty-six (556) votes which represents 0.10% of the total valid votes cast.

Like Sawyer, the party’s Kasho Holland Cole won as Chairperson of the Western Rural District Council for the second time with  One hundred and fifty-seven thousand one hundred and sixty-four (157,164) valid votes cast, representing 52.51% of total valid votes cast.

Cole’s closest Opponent Ayo Eugene Cole of the SLPP got a total of one hundred and thirty five thousand and seventy-nine which represent 45.1% of the total valid votes cast.

 In the 2018 elections both Kono District Council and Koidu Sembehun City Council mayoral positions were won by the Coalition for Change (C4C). This time both went to the SLPP.
