Police in Kenema say they are investigating three school girls who are suspected of involvement in cultism. All three pupils were busted by school authorities after a failed attempt to forcefully initiate another girl.
All the accused are pupils of the Methodist Secondary School in Kenema.
A spokesman for the Police in the district, Amara Maggoh, explained to Politico that the incident occurred on the 3rd March at about 1pm when they received a distress call from the bursar at the Methodist Secondary School, Peter Tamba Fanya, informing them of an unusual behavior within its premises. He said the police responded immediately by deploying at the scene.
“Upon arrival at the Methodist Secondary School, three school going pupils, all of them girls, were handed over to police by the staff of the school and conveyed to the police station for interrogation,” he added.
The pupil who was allegedly been chased for forceful initiation is also in protective custody, according to the police.
The police’s preliminary investigation has shown that there are two clubs in the school: Vegous and Moraty Queens Club, this is despite the fact that club activities had been banned in schools and colleges across Sierra Leone.
Maggoh said they found out that in one of the clubs, Vegous, there were twenty members - three girls and seventeen boys.
“The unusual situation happened after one of the girls (name withheld) was chased to be initiated forcefully,” Detective Maggoh stated.
Three of the four girls are below the age of 16, another one, who is suspected to be the ringleader, Jattu Amara, is 20, according to the police.
Police said whiles the investigation continues, they have already found scars on the backs of the girls. They said the club had started initiation since January this year.
Maggoh confirmed that the girls have already started naming their colleagues who were all part of the initiation ceremony.
Police in the district said in the coming days they will now conduct raids in schools across the city to clamp down on cultism.
