The administration of Njala University says it has ordered 26 of its lecturers to go into self-isolation after they participated in a funeral ceremony.
The lecturers reportedly attended the funeral of a former colleague who died of Covid-19 related complications.
Politico learned that the late lecturer was hospitalized for about two weeks, first at the UMC Mercy Hospital and he was later taken to the Bo Government Hospital where he died on June 12.
The result for his swab test came back positive posthumously.
Assistant Public Relations officer at the university, Ayuba Koroma, said the late lecturer never visited the campus since he started feeling sick.
“While at the hospital, his colleagues, as per custom, paid visit to him,” Koroma said, adding that when he died they also went to attend his funeral.
The spokesman said the university has informed the District Covid-19 Response Committee (DEOC) which has agreed to take over handling of the situation.
As a further measure, the administration has put on hold its ongoing e-learning training session and cut down on the number of administrative staff, allowing only “essential staff.” The academic staff, including Deans of school and Heads of department, were also advised to stay at home, Koroma said, adding that the student services unit has also been closed for the time being.
