Two Sierra Leonean journalists have completed a one-month media training organized by the Supreme Council for Media Regulations in Cairo, Egypt.
The Sierra Leone Ambassador to Egypt, Sadiq Sillah graced the closing and certification ceremony of the 47th training course in Cairo for sixteen Anglophone broadcasters from eight African countries.
In his address to the participants, Ambassador Sillah noted that Egypt has many opportunities, which he said African countries can benefit from, and encouraged the participants to create networking that will open more partnerships.
In his remarks, Egypt’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Cultural Issues and Scholarships, Hatem Hassouba encouraged the participants to use the knowledge and skills acquired from the one month course to tell African stories in positive ways to the rest of the world, stressing his country’s commitment in promoting media partnership with other African nations, through capacity building and human developments.
One of the participants from the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation, Cecilia Alice Sesay expressed delight at the opportunity and spoke highly of the experience she has gained during the course.
“I also learnt about inclusive journalism: how I can use the media to amplify various voices and perspectives in my reporting,” Sesay said.
On content creation, she said ”I learnt about identifying the right targeted audience as prominent factor for producing an impactful content that will resonate with my audience’’.
Osman Mohamed Kamara, from Democracy Radio FM 98.1 expressed gratitude to the Supreme Council for Media Regulations for the opportunity given to them. “For me, this training is timely. It has all the information that I was expecting to have in this training, especially on documentaries, field reporting, and also one key topic they taught us that has to do about how Africa has been losing its natural resources and how to hold government accountable’’.
He said upon his return home, he will utilize all the knowledge acquired and change his style of reporting. He also promised to organize one-day training for colleague journalists in Sierra Leone on the knowledge and skills acquired.
