Sierra Leoneans for Ebola Relief (SLER), an international humanitarian organisation based in the USA, has donated food and medical equipment worth $1.5 million to the country’s National Ebola Respond Center (NERC).

While presenting the items, Roselin J. Smith of Constituency 103 in the Western Area Urban, explained that the organisation drew its membership fromcivic organisations that came together to raise funds and secure medical supplies in support of the fight against Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

She explained that the chairman of the parliamentary committee on Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, AugustineTorto, on a visit to the USA had made a presentation to Sierra Leoneans living in Chicago on the seriousness of the EVD in the country and how it was killing Sierra Leoneans.

NERC’s donor aid coordinator, Dr. Sheku Sesay, who received the items, expressed appreciation and thanked those in Chicago for their support and consideration, especially at a time when the country was faced with a crisis. He said that that was not the first donation they had received from Sierra Leoneans living in the Diaspora.

“The country has received a lot of support from her sons and daughters in the Diaspora and we hope they will continue to support the country,” Dr. Sesay stated. He said the government and its people had done their best in suppressing the Ebola virus.

He discouraged the public from being complacent in the Ebola fight, noting that: “Ebola is tricky and can change almost always. We should still follow the necessary precautions as Ebola is still in the country,” he urged.
