Newly appointed chairperson of the Human Rights Commission in Sierra Leone, Brima Sheriff, has donated four litres of chlorine to each of 15 selected schools in eastern Freetown.
He said the donation was being made on behalf of his family whom he said was committed to ensuring that schools and other institutions were supported to fight the deadly Ebola virus. He said the disease was dangerous and should be treated with the seriousness it deserved.
“I am just giving this from the little I have. More efforts are needed from all Sierra Leoneans to help fight the disease”, he said and urged others to join in raising awareness around the virus and issues surrounding it.
He said ways of breaking the chain should be sought as soon as possible.
“What I am now giving out is just a drop in the ocean, as I can’t provide for all the schools in the country” Commissioner Sheriff said. He, however, assured that his family would look for ways to raise more funds to help other schools that were also at risk of contracting the virus without chlorine. He called on all citizens to always use chlorinated water to wash their hands in and out of their homes.
Principal of Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School, Abdul Karim Sesay, thanked the Sheriff family for providing them with chlorine. He said they had looked forward to getting such offers when commissioner Sheriff showed up in their school. He promised they would use the antibacterial liquid for its intended purpose.
Schools that benefited include the Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School, Harmond International, Lauradov Secondary School, Wesleyan Secondary School, King Fahad, Sierra Leone Muslim Congress, Zadet Primary School, Sierra Leone Muslim Brotherhood, SLIMS and UMC.
