14 soldiers killed in attempted coup in Sierra Leone

The Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah has confirmed that fourteen soldiers were killed during the 26th November attack at the Wilberforce Barracks Armory.

Bah made this statement at the Government’s weekly press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Conference room, Freetown on 28th November. 

Giving a general update on the attack, he said apart from the fourteen Sierra Leone Armed Forces personnel, one Police Officer, one Correctional Officer, and a Private Guard also lost their lives.

Thirteen military officers and a civilian have been arrested, Bah said. The minister noted that the 26th November attack has now been confirmed to be “a failed coup.” He said some of the leaders of the “coup” are in Police custody while others remain at large.

Bah pronounced the names of wanted persons whom he said were of interest to the police in the attempted coup.

In his response, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Peter Lavahun said one of the assailants was killed in the crossfire at Wilberforce. “After repelling them, they attempted to attack Cockerill Barracks; they were also repelled. They went on to attack the Joint Logistics Unit (JLU) at Murray Town Barrack and were repelled, “the military officer said, noting that another assailant nicknamed Leather Boot was also killed. He said two other assailants who are soldiers were also arrested.

Some of the attackers escaped, Lavahun said. The military officer said they chased the assailants to Jui who then abandoned their vehicle containing three RPGS, Six bombs, and fifteen AK47 riffles.

The Inspector- General of Police (IGP), William Fayia Sellu said they are investigating “an attempted coup. He said a group of people tried to use subversive attempt to unseat an incumbent leadership. The Head of the Police said they are doing “mopping up”.

“The security situation is under control, and we continue to pursue those who attempted to unseat a legitimate government by use of force.
