Police at Mattru Jong division Bonthe district are currently investigating the death of an 11 year old girl who was allegedly raped. Politico understands from Police sources in the district that the deceased went to buy recharge card for her grandma when she first went missing on the 21st of August this year.
Local Unit Commander (LUC), Mattru Jong police division, Superintendent Samuel Kargbo explained in a media interview that a report was filed on the 22 of August, 2020 around 7am by one Musu Tucker of Timbo section in Mattru Jong about the demise of her grand child whom she sent to buy recharge card at around 7pm the previous day and was not seen even after a whole night’s search.
According to LUC Kargbo, he immediately dispatched police officers to follow her to go in search of the missing child.
He added that it was during the search that the Police found the slippers of the child at a thatch house where cigarettes and alcohol are sold and so they continued searching but could not find the girl.
Kargbo noted that they were later alerted to return to where they have searched as there were unusual movements within the community. Upon return, he said they, discovered a body identified as the grandchild of Musu Tucker abandoned at a plantation in a compound.
He noted that the scene was secured and the body taken to the United Brethren in Christ (UBC) Hospital, Mattru Jong for medical examination.
“To the best of my knowledge we did not observe any injury on the surface of the body. We actually suspected that it will be something related to sexual penetration they have done on the child; because we saw blood on her private part", LUC Samuel Kargbo said.
Police say 13 arrests have been made since then.
The discovery sparked outrage in the community. Police say they had to be swift to deal with the situation.
"People were eager and wanting to know what police will do. Tensions were there, we equally responded to those tensions and we calmed down the public,” he said.
Residents in Mattru have now called on the Police for a swift investigation.
