The Police Local Unit Commander in Makeni has confirmed the death of 11 people in a gruesome road accident which took place yesterday after a truck carrying mangoes and traders plunged into a narrow bridge on the Gbendembu-Makeni road.
Chief Superintendent of Police, Gibril Muhammad Turay said they included five women, one of them pregnant.
They were transporting the fruits to the northern city of Makeni.
The accident has highlighted yet again the poor regulation of public transport vehicles as it is commonplace for cargo trucks to also carry passengers crammed inside them.
It also brings to the fore the poor traffic regulation of vehicles and the bad shape in which the country's feeder roads are especially in the countryside.
