A heavy duty truck crashed into the fence of the China Friendship House at Brookfields on Thursday 25th August causing significant damage to motorbike taxis and rickshaw-like motorized transport, locally known as kekehs parked in the area. Eye witnesses told Politico that apparently the brakes of the truck, carrying hundreds of bags of cement, failed as the vehicle made its way down King Herman road.
Three passengers in a kekeh were wounded, one of them seriously. They were taken to the nearby hospital. One of the many traders who normally do business near the fence said “we survived only because God intervened today”. A motorbike taxi rider said they fled the scene because they were warned by the driver’s mate who shouted that we should “get out of the way because our brakes have failed”.
This crash has happened at a time of heightened concern about the intensification of street trading, unofficial parking areas usually occupied by motorbike taxis and kekehs and the roadworthiness of all vehicles especially heavy duty trucks.
