German plastic recycling company to open in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Germany has told officials of the Institute for Ocean Plastic Recycling in Berlin that waste ocean plastic has contributed to the dwindling of Sierra Leone’s marine resources and is also a major source of water contamination.

The envoy said “anything that helps in addressing the environmental problem would be appreciated by the Government”, according to a release from the embassy in Berlin.

The CEO of the Institute for Ocean Plastic Recycling who was part of the team that visited the Sierra Leone embassy said the “recycling process is scheduled to start in Sierra Leone and if it works well, it might be extended to other countries within the region”. Peter Bales said his company intends to transfer waste management courses to Universities in Sierra Leone in the form of exchange programs. He said garbage would be burnt to produce energy and other useful products and expressed his intention to visit Sierra Leone and liaise with environmentalists on the project.

Bales said the recycling institute intends to, among other things generate needed energy locally and in a sustainable way and create such prospects in Sierra Leone, promote knowledge and prosperity in Sierra Leone and the region, provides theoretical and practical knowledge, creates jobs and income opportunities, enhance University Colleges in the areas of management and the development of an educational complex for recycling process and promote eco-tourism in Sierra Leone

Ambassador Baryoh thanked Peter Bales and team from the Institute for Ocean Plastic Recycling for their interest to invest in Sierra Leone and assured them that the “Embassy will do the needful to enhance the project”. He encouraged the institute to submit a comprehensive project regarding their intention for the attention of the authorities in Sierra Leone.
