Pupils and heads of the Koyeima Government Boys Secondary School in Bo district southern Sierra Leone have called on the government and other well-wishers to facelift their school.
Built in 1928, the school is one of the institutions established in the provinces many years before independence to ensure education for the rural population in the country.
Koyeima Boys School according to many, served as feeder school for the more illustrious Government Boys School in Bo Commonly known as Bo School upon Koyeima pupils’ completion of the Basic Education Certificate Examination. The school according to its principal Emmanuel Lansana has over the years been neglected by all those concerned including its past pupils who are today better placed in society.
Lansana said he has approached the board of the school and the Ministry of Basic and Senior Education since the last government and even the current regime of President Julius Maada Bio, with no headway in terms of solving the problems of the school.
"The last time mattresses were supplied to the school was about 14 years ago but I have taken 5 years as Acting Principal of this school and nothing has been done", he said.
The school is a boarding home with three blocks named A,B and C that housed 288 pupils but according to the principal lack mattresses for the pupils to lay on and the delay in the supply of food and nonfood items for the pupils are other difficulties encountered.
Speaking to Politico with the consent of the Principal, Mohamed Farma a pupil of the school said they sleep on the floor whilst others join benches together to sleep on.
“I am pleading to the Ministry of Education to pay attention to Koyeima School. Our situation is a call for concern ", he said.
Assistant Senior Prefect of the school, Philip J. Kamara said they were told that the current government had provided mattresses to other government secondary schools, but that such gesture had not been replicated to their school.
Member of Parliament of constituency 084 in Bo, Joseph Bash Kamara said he has visited the boarding home and promised to engage his colleagues in the Education Committee and the officials of the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education to come to the aid of the pupils. He also solicited the support of the old students of the school.
