By Septimus Senessie in Kono
Just
a week after the visit of US Ambassador Michael Owen, the Executive
Representative of the UN Secretary-General has visited Kono district
to campaign for violence-free elections on November 17th.
Addressing
civil society organisations and journalists at the United Nations
Conference hall in Koidu city, Jens
Anders Toyberg-Frandzen
said the 2012 elections were the only determining factor for the
development of Sierra Leone. He said Sierra Leone was no longer a
post-war country but a developing country whose people must maintain
their hard won peace and focus on the development of the country.
He pointed out that politics was meant for just a period of time
while development was a continuous process. He described civil
society and the media as “an important force in the promotion and
development of democracy” adding that they should remain neutral
and apolitical.
The audience
thanked the ERSG for visiting Kono saying he should be coming to the
district on regular basis and not only during elections.
