Budget: Opposition MP makes case for Sierra Leone judiciary

By Saio Marrah

The Member of Parliament for Constituency 068 in Kambia District, Dr. Ibrahim Bun Kamara, has observed that the office of Secretary to the president has a larger allocation than the Judiciary and the Legislature.

The law maker made this statement during the debate on the 2021 Appropriation Bill on Monday 23rd November in the well of Parliament. He said that the two arms of government, Judiciary and Legislature, needed to be strengthened for effective operation of democracy, noting that the judiciary has suffered to the extent that most cases take a long time to be heard because of lack of judges in the country.

Dr. Kamara added that parliament has been constrained with its oversight functions due to lack of finance to service its oversight functions.

“The judiciary and the parliament are two separate arms of government with a budget that is less than the budget of the secretary [to the president]. These are arms of government that need to be strengthened for effective functioning of our democracy,” he stated.
