A man carrying an illegal gun has been caught trying to sneak his way through the Mayorlor checkpoint in the Tonkolili district, early yesterday morning. The man who was named as Santigie Bai Koroma was found to be in possession of an AK 47 rifle together with twenty-two live rounds of ammunition that he had kept in a backpack he was carrying.
Reports say he ran into the bush as he tried to evade the normal Police searches at the checkpoint that was being manned by Police personnel under the command of Inspector Ibrahim Tarrawalli. Koroma was spotted by officers who together with civilians, gave chase and finally apprehended him. They found the gun and bullets in his backpack.
According to reports, the suspect was from Murray Town, a community in the west of Freetown. The gun with serial number 04194 was not registered with the Police, the regional Media officer, North East, Inspector Abdul Rahman Sankoh, confirmed to Politico in a telephone interview on Tuesday.
Inspector Sankoh said the matter has been transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department of the Police in Makeni for further investigations. Carrying of an unlicensed gun is illegal under the laws of Sierra Leone.
