The sexual offences division of the High Court in Freetown has sentenced 21-year old Alpha Sesay to ten years in jail including the time he spent on remand. Sesay was found guilty of a one-count indictment of sexual penetration of a child below the age of 18.
Delivering his judgement on Monday 17th August 2020, Justice Momoh Jah Stevens noted that because the accused didn’t waste the court’s time by confessing to have engaged in the act of sexual penetration with the victim, he was handing down a minimum sentence.
According to the indictment the accused person on the 7th May 2020, in the Western Area of Freetown, sexually penetrated the victim who was 14 years at the time of the incident.
In his statement to the police, the accused admitted to have been in a love relationship with the victim and had harbored her at some point during the three days coronavirus lockdown and had sex with her.
The accused, who didn’t have a lawyer, admitted knowing that the girl was 14 years old but he said he didn’t know it was against the law to have sex with her.
The prosecutor, lawyer Jenneh B. Kamara presented three witnesses during the course of the trial.
