The Ministry of Labour and Social Security, with funding from the German International Cooperation (GIZ), has donated Veronica buckets, hand sanitizers, face masks and sanitary soaps to over fifty businesses, learning institutions, religious bodies as part of efforts to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The presentation of the donated materials was done at a ceremony held at the ministry's headquarters at New England Ville, Freetown.
The Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Security, Lansana Mohamed Dumbuya, said corona virus had affected every facets of the lives of Sierra Leoneans, vis-à-vis health, education and the economy, noting that with effective preventive measures, the virus can be contained.
He urged the beneficiary entities to continue educating their membership on the preventive measures against COVID--19, such as observing social distancing, masking up, washing hands frequently and reporting to hospitals whenever they experience persistent fever, cough or weakness.
Dumbuya said as a ministry dealing with the largest component; the labour force, and particularly the occupational safety and health of workers, it is responsible to sensitize employers and employees on the heath hazard and prevention of the pandemic.
The Deputy Minister said before now, the ministry has visited several manufacturing industries to sensitization employers and employees on the danger and prevention of COVID—19, noting that they will continue the exercise to other entities.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Sierra Leone Labour Congress (SLLC), the Treasurer of SLLC, Korthor--Kai Conteh, lauded the efforts of the ministry in trying to put an end to corona virus in the country.
He thanked the Government of Sierra Leone for providing social safety to workers in the hospitality industry and called on the government to consider affected workers in other work places.
Other entities that benefited from the gift included markets in Congo Town and Kroo Town Road, Ataya bases at Jui and Calaba Town, Haja Fatima Zahara Mosgue, Employers' Federation of Sierra Leone, King Production and BRAC.
