Chinese medical teams currently in Sierra Leone will be extending their stay in the country to help it fight the Covid-19 pandemic, Politico has learnt.
Three Chinese medical teams are currently in the country and they will stay for one year more year, according to China’s ambassador in Freetown, Hu Zhangliang.
He was quoted by the Chinese news agency, Xinhua, saying that the move was necessary because of the important role the Chinese have been playing in complementing the Sierra Leone Government’s response to the pandemic. He added that it is a demonstration of strengthening of ties between China and Sierra Leone.
According to Xinhua, the decision to extend the stay of the Chinese health expert is also due to the non-availability of flights.
The three Chinese medical teams arrived in the country in June 2019. The are specifically involved in the detection, diagnosing, and treating COVID-19 cases, working side by side and around the clock with their Sierra Leonean counterparts.
“This year is full of challenges as COVID-19 pandemic ravages the world including China and Sierra Leone,” said Ambassador Hu Zhangliang, adding that this year also witnessed even stronger cooperation and closer relations between the two countries as they stand firmly with each other in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
