NASSIT worker on suspended jail term

By Francis H. Murray

Twenty-seven year old George Langley, a staff of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT), has been jailed for twelve months by Magistrate Hannah Bonnie, after he pleaded guilty to stealing a vehicle.

The Magistrate suspended the sentence until the 30th of June by which time the convict must comply with the court’s request for him to “satisfactorily compensate the complainant.”

Granting the accused to a Le 200, 000, 000 bail or two sureties with one having a biological connection with the accused last Friday, Magistrate Bonnie noted that the complainant, Joyce Sia Nyuma, suffered emotional as well as financial costs in her efforts to recover the stolen vehicle for which she needed to be compensated.

She said that even though the charges against the accused had been made light by the recovery of the missing vehicle, the accused needed to be reminded that what he did was wrong and that she would order his arrest at the end of June if he did not “satisfactorily settle the matter with the complainant.”

State prosecutor, Inspector Isata Gbassay Fofanah, had earlier told the court that the accused on Wednesday 20th May 2020 stole a Toyata Rav 4 vehicle with registration No APM 272 valued $6,200, equivalent to Le 62, 000, 000, being the property of Joyce Nyuma his workmate.
