Minister of Sports Paul Kamara Tuesday failed to turn up in parliament after the parliamentary oversight committee on Sports summoned him in relation to a leaked audio circulating in social media.
Kamara was supposed to appear before the committee together caretaker Coach of the national team, Leone Stars, John Jebor Sherrington. They were summoned to explain their role in the shameful telephone conversation between the two. Only Sherrington turned up.
“We have not received any letter or telephone call from the minister,” said Mohammed Tholley, MP and member of the opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party, who chaired the meeting on behalf of the committee chairman Hassan Sesay, before calling off the planned meeting. MP Sesay was said to be ill.
Tholley said the meeting could not be continued in the absent of the Minister.
All Peoples Congress MP Alhassan Kamara from Kalaba Town in the east end of Freetown expressed disappointment over the image the two men had created with the audio.
“Our image as a country has been dragged to the gutter,” he lamented, adding that the situation surrounding sporting activities had made it impossible for majority of Sierra Leoneans to enjoy football and said that it was unacceptable for it to continue this way.
MP Tholley then announced the rescheduling of the meeting for this Thursday, July 2. The Acting Chair of the day said they were going to send another summon letter to the minister, warning: “if anyone refuse to reach parliament, parliament will reach them.”
Politico tried reaching Paul Kamara to know why he did not make it to parliament, but with no success.
