Man remanded for flouting Ebola laws in Sierra Leone

Magistrate Komba Kamanda of Court No. 2 has remanded a youth from eastern Freetown at the Pademba Correctional Center for allegedly entering a quarantined home without lawful authority and for alleged obstruction of police duty.

The accused, Alusine Koroma, pleaded guilty to the charges and begged for mercy. According to the charge sheet the young man on Saturday, 22 November this year, entered a quarantined home at Upper Easton Street without lawful authority, contrary to Regulation 6 [2] of the Public Emergency Regulations of 2014. He also allegedly obstructed a police officer whiles executing his duty to the public. He had no legal representation.

Before ordering his remand, Magistrate Kamanda stated that he would not hesitate to imprison anyone who tried to undermine the effort of the state in the Ebola fight, adding that if the court failed to take strong measures the Ebola Virus Disease would not be overcome soon.

He noted: “Liberia is steadily recovering from Ebola because there is law and order.”

The matter was adjourned to Friday 28 November for the court to start looking into the prosecution’s case.
