A woman in her later 20s and her 18-month-old son died yesterday morning after a perimeter fence collapsed on their house situated at a place called “Down De Hole” at  36 Old Railway Line, Brookfields in Freetown.

According to Sahr Bendu, an eyewitness living in the same compound as the deceased, the bodies of Sallay Samura and her son Alhaji Koroma were removed under the rubble, adding that the son was alive but was later pronounced dead at the King Harman Road Hospital.

Bendu told Politico that the fence collapsed as a result of the heavy down pour of rain coupled with a poor drainage system which causing a flood in their compound. He said the water settled in the compound until it collapsed the fence. Bendu said he had never experienced that kind of flooding for over the past ten years he had been living in the area.

Other residents in the vicinity also suffered loss of property ranging from furniture to electrical appliances. They said part of the fence was “still standing as a death trap to passersby” and expressed the fear that more flooding would take place in the coming days. They called on the authorities to remedy the situation before another trouble occurred.
