The Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) has been represented by its Executive Secretary Hawa Samai at training on “Women’s Leadership in National Defense” held in Monterey, California, the United States.

The training focused on human-centered design principles to enhance the participating trainees’ experience and best practices in learning.

The various sessions deliberated on understanding global Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) objectives and principles, identifying the main challenges and opportunities associated with actors including women in positions of authority, power, and strategic decision-making.

The programme was supported by the Office of Security Cooperation - United States of America mission and the two-week event attracted trainees both civil and security from 11 countries around the world.

Recognizing the importance of male mentors and advocates in support of WPS principles and creating professional networks with defense and security professionals from around the world were integral parts of the training exercise.

The Institute for Security Governance (ISD) in a statement said it was ‘’proud to contribute to best practice sharing and knowledge transfer with their partners and allies’’.  It said the trainees completed the course feeling enlightened for change management with an informed perceptive on gender approach and sensitivities for their work and communities".

According to ISD, it would follow up on graduates’ successes and will be working with them through their challenges.

It says the relevant growth and evolution of the Women, Peace, and Security course participants will be captured and shared as updates.

ICPNC was formed by the Government of President Julius Maada Bio to address the numerous challenges to the peace and stability of the country.
