ILO boosts Kenema Council with 3 compactors machines

By Politico Staff Writer

In order to support local councils for feeder roads construction and rehabilitation to enhance Feed Salone Programme, the International Labour Organization (ILO) has handed over three compactor machines worth millions of Leones to Kenema District Council.

The machines were meant for local contractors that are on roads rehabilitation and construction in the district.

According to ILO Engineer, Amadu Sajor Jalloh, the donation was as a result of the constraints faced by contractors to get compactors that compress the roads after they have been rehabilitated. He pointed out that without compressors the rains would damage the roads and ruin  all the efforts applied by engineers.

He stated that the contractors signed a temporary document to ensure that the machines would be taken care of as they are meant for the construction of roads starting from Bendu Junction , Tomaju toToroto Potehun .

He advised the contractors to take proper care of the machines as they are not only meant for those projects but for subsequent ones in the future so they could benefit everyone in the district.

On behalf of the Kenema district council, the deputy Chairperson of the council, Frances Jambawai expressed gratitude to ILO for helping  the councils that the people depend on highly for service delivery especially on improving the road network.

He added that the machines will help the road to last for a very long period, saying government prioritizes the road sector in order to actualize the feed salone initiative.

The deputy chairperson warned the contractors not to misuse the machines but to  utilize them for their intended purpose, explaining that  with good roads, farmers can access the market with their agricultural produce which will bring income to them and help boost the district’s economy.  He said every year the council expends huge amount of money on feeder road rehabilitation but there have always been challenges regarding sustainability  due to lack of machinery that will make the work by the  contractors lasts longer.

He called on those concerned to do quality work for the district so that more doors will be opened to other contractors in the future.
